Zoo – HDD & Open Cut
This project involved navigating the complex underground environment of a historic zoo with poorly documented utility infrastructure. We implemented both horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for a 450-foot section and open-cut techniques while allowing the zoo to maintain normal operations and meet stringent deadlines.
Challenges
- Extremely congested underground utility environment with limited documentation
- Need to maintain safe, confined work areas due to high visitor traffic
- Discovery of unexpected infrastructure, including an undocumented storm drain
- Adverse weather conditions requiring weekend work to maintain schedule
Solutions & Approach
- Conducted extensive proactive potholing to identify nearly all underground utilities before boring began
- Implemented carefully planned work zones to minimize impact on zoo operations
- Demonstrated flexibility by providing additional assistance wherever needed
- Maintained accelerated work schedule despite weather delays
